Tracing Your Roots

Many of our communities trace their beginnings to the Acadians, Planters and loyalist settlers who came here from the Old World, as well as Scottish, German, Dutch and Irish ancestry.

Visit one of the permanent European settlements in Canada at Port Royal, where the Sieur de Mons and Samuel de Champlain built their now-famous Habitation. Experience a way of life at the Historic Acadian Village in West Pubnico and the picturesque French Acadian Shore. Grand Pre National Historic Site of Canada commemorates 400 years of Acadian history and is one of the main sites of the 1755 expulsion of the Acadians.

The Black Loyalist Heritage Site in Birchtown celebrates the history of some of Canada’s first settlers; many of whom were passengers on the Underground Railroad. The Town of Lunenburg has been honoured with a UNESCO World Heritage designation, as the best surviving example of a British colonial settlement in North America.
