Bluenose Coast

Lunenburg

A world-class fishing and shipbuilding port, the community was founded in 1753 by Protestants from Germany, Switzerland and France. British surveyor-general Charles Morris laid down the grid of streets running up from the harbour and perpendicular to it, creating a compact settlement. Still intact some 250 years later, these narrow streets and the wooden homes that line them have earned Old Town Lunenburg distinction as both a National Historic District and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take a walking or horse and buggy tour to view the architecture and working waterfront. Visit the restored elegance of St. John’s Anglican Church, the Lunenburg Academy and the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Note the weathervane atop St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. It’s a codfish! A working blacksmith and dory shop first opened in 1895. Many renovated historic buildings are now attractive inns, restaurants, and shops. There are 19 art galleries in the community.

  • Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic displays activities associated with the offshore and inshore fishery. It features a floating museum and Eastern Canada’s largest saltwater aquarium.
  • Bluenose II, when in port, is docked adjacent to the Fisheries Museum. Built in 1963 in Lunenburg, she is Nova Scotia’s sailing ambassador, and Bluenose is featured on the back of the Canadian dime.
