What is the climate like?

Summer temperatures can reach over 30C (80F). If you get too hot, you are never far from the cool breezes of our coastline. Although average daily temperatures are 23C (75F), evenings cool to a pleasant 16C (60F). Spring and Fall temperatures are around 10-15C (50-59F), while the evenings dip to around 0C (32F). Our winter climate is moderate and snowfall varies.

What should we pack?

Pack clothes for warm and cold temperatures, it is a common saying in Nova Scotia that if you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes, it’ll change. Bring everything from your camera to an umbrella and sun block.

What type of currency should I bring?

Canadian! Although some places accept American currency, it is not widely used. Bring some travelers cheques if you’re bringing a large amount.

What is a Tidal Bore? And where can I see one in Southwest Nova Scotia?

When the tide is coming in, tidal bores (which look like a wave traveling against the flow of the river) surge up several rivers which flow into the Minas Basin. Some great tidal bores can be seen on the St. Croix, Meander, Shubenacadie, Maccan and Salmon River.

What languages are spoken?

While English and French are Canada’s two official languages, most people speak English while select areas speak both languages, of course, all of our national historic site staff speak both. Occasionally, you’ll hear people conversing in German as well.
